What is Polypectomy?

A polypectomy is the procedure used to define the removal of polyps.

How is a Polypectomy performed?

A polypectomy is a painless procedure that is typically performed at the time of your colonoscopy. The surgeon will insert a biopsy forcep through a special channel in the colonoscope, allowing the surgeon to grasp the polyp and remove it: There are several types of biopsy forceps, the most common being a cold biopsy, hot biopsy and snare. Your surgeon will determine which forcep would be most effective in removing your polyp(s).

There are rare instances when a polypectomy may not be able to be performed at the time of your colonoscopy, such as if a polyp is too large or the location and/or position of the polyp is less than optimal for safe removal.
