Patients who are considered high risk for anal cancer can now be screened at Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery using High Resolution Anoscopy (HRA). High Risk patients, those who have been diagnosed with an abnormal anal cytology, should have an HRA: Abnormal anal Pap smears, anal dysplasia and anal cancer are all caused by HPV (Human PapillomaVirus).
No other diagnostic procedure can accurately examine the anal canal for these types of issues: During an HRA examination, the anal canal is examined using a small thin round tube called an anoscope which is connected to a high resolution magnifying instrument called a colposcope: Abnormal tissue can be identified, and a biopsy can be obtained.
Currently, three surgeons at FCRS are trained and perform HRA’s, including Drs. Donald Colvin, Caroline Sanchez, and Kate Khalifeh.
