Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a process of teaching people how to control certain bodily functions. Biofeedback instruments monitor and display muscle activity for the patient to see.

It is a safe non-invasive method of achieving pelvic floor muscular contraction and relaxation used in the treatment of fecal incontinence and constipation. Utilizing a small sensor placed in the anus, this process provides computerized visual “feedback” to the patient to guide muscle training. Unlike other medical therapies, biofeedback requires patient participation and motivation. It is a highly effective treatment with roughly an 80% success rate based on scientific studies.

Goals of this therapy are to restore pelvic floor function and to alleviate the symptoms of incontinence and constipation.

There are no known side-effects of biofeedback.

Obtaining Treatment: If your surgeon determines that you would benefit from biofeedback you will be referred to a highly capable group of therapists. Following treatment, the patient may need to return for assessment of the effectiveness of the biofeedback.

Cost and insurance information: Biofeedback is generally but not always covered by insurance. Please refer to your insurance policy regarding this prior to scheduling your appointments for treatment.
