Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery, P.C. is the largest single-specialty group of its kind in the Washington, D.C. area. Although we are all Board Certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery, we have chosen to limit our practice to colon and rectal surgery in order to stay at the forefront of this specialty. We incorporate the best and latest developments for diagnosis and treatment into our practice. We practice evidence based medicine in all aspects of our patient care.
FCRS provides the highest level of expertise and state-of-the-art treatment of colon and rectal cancer, colonoscopy screening, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoid problems and bowel control. FCRS physicians are leaders in minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery in addition to offering the best outcomes in all areas of management. Compared to the national average, our patients are more likely to emerge from surgery without a colostomy bag and FCRS cancer cure rate is equal to the best treatment centers in the world.
In addition to our surgical expertise, we offer your patients the full range of outpatient evaluation and treatment for anorectal issues. Our most important value to your patients is an accurate diagnosis. Fully 40% of the patients we see with a diagnosis of hemorrhoids are found to have a different pathology as the cause of their symptoms. We frequently see patients who have been repeatedly treated by ‘hemorrhoid relief centers’ who on examination are found to have a different problem entirely. When the problem is hemorrhoidal, we offer your patients the full armamentarium of office based treatment for their condition. This includes appropriate medications, infrared coagulation, rubber band ligation and sclerotherapy.
Our anorectal physiology lab provides us the ability to diagnosis and treat pelvic floor issues such as obstructed defecation, non-relaxing puborectalis, chronic constipation as well as incontinence problems. Transrectal ultrasound is also available to help us assess large rectal polyps or rectal cancers. Ultrasonography is also utilized in the assessment of sphincter injuries and other anal pathology.
In January 2007 we opened our new Ambulatory Surgery Center which is co-located with our new main office on Prosperity Ave in Fairfax. Our ASC now brings a new level of convenience, efficiency and a well-needed sense of calm to the performance of outpatient anorectal surgery and colonoscopy. For understandable reasons, patients often have a great deal of apprehension going into these types of procedures. Our ASC provides them with a quiet, beautifully decorated, professional atmosphere, free of the hassles of the hospital environment. Our staff is friendly and understanding. They go out of their way to make the patient relaxed and comfortable. We have received raves from our patients who have been delighted with their experience.
Patients with colorectal problems are often in pain and need to be seen promptly. We make every effort to make appointments readily available for those who need to be seen on an urgent basis. During business hours there is always one of the surgeons in the office who will be happy to take a call from a referring physician concerning a patient who needs to be seen urgently. In most cases, arrangements will be made to see the patient that day or at latest the next. To speak with one of the surgeons we ask that you call our Fairfax office at 703-280-2841, ext #0. Fairfax Hospital is a participant in the Americal College of Surgeon's National Surgery Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP). This program compiles outcome statistics from each member hospital. These are compared to the national average to help identify hospitals that need improvement and those that are succeeding in the goal of performing safer surgery. The 2007 statistics for Colorectal Surgery at Fairfax Hospital demonstrated 30-day mortality and morbidity rates that were equal to the national average and Surgical Site Infection rates (see Bar Graph below) which were markedly lower than the national average. The Fairfax rate was described as exemplary in the report.

The Charts below reflect
Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery's (FCRS) statistics for cancer survival
compared to those of the Southeast National Cancer Data Base (NCDB SE
on the chart below). The NCDB SE statistics are compiled from the results
of colon and rectal cancer surgery performed at a wide variety of hospitals
throughout the southeastern United States.
