“Having been trained by some of the best colorectal surgeons in the world, I have an obligation to share this knowledge with patients, nurses and other doctors. This legacy is something I cherish greatly.”
A fast paced, intellectually challenging environment where substantial and positive changes are made in people's lives attracted Dr. Savoca to surgery. His greatest thrill in practicing medicine is meeting people from all walks of life and seeing how much they are the same.
Dr. Savoca was music major at Albany State University in New York, receiving a Bachelor of Art, magna cum laude, in 1980. He continued his education at State University of New York (SUNY) Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn, earning his medical degree in 1985.
He completed a surgical residency at Yale University School of Medicine, where he also was a Research Fellow in Yale’s Gastroenterology Surgical Research Group. Dr. Savoca also completed a Colorectal Fellowship at the University of Minnesota and served as a staff surgeon at Durham (North Carolina) Regional Hospital before joining Fairfax Hospital in 1993.
Dr. Savoca is on the faculty of the Department of Surgery at Georgetown University Medical School. His medical specialty is minimally invasive or laparoscopic colon surgery, which reduces patients’ pain and lets them return to full activity more quickly after surgery. He holds certification from the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
Dr. Savoca continues his interest in music as a classic pianist. His wife and their four children share his love of music and the singing and playing of music is a great outlet from the seriousness of surgery. The Savoca family also enjoys skiing, and they are active in fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
