“What I find rewarding in surgery is the combined process of the patient’s care. The overall assessment is followed by the determination of the best treatment options and then helping the patient navigate through those choices to make the best decisions. Finally, it involves providing them with the most meticulous procedure aimed at achieving the lowest possible complication rate. No step in that process is more important than the others.”

As valedictorian of his New York high school class, Dr. Muller earned a unique scholarship opportunity to study mechanical engineering at the University of South Carolina. As a junior in college, he realized that although he was fascinated with the science and precision that engineering involved and was impressed with what it could accomplish, he lacked the sheer passion for inanimate machinery that some of his peers seemed to share. Since his true passion had always been to help other people, Dr. Muller decided on medicine as a career after watching surgery and then seeing those same patients in the doctor’s office following their recovery.

After completing his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, he stayed on at the University of South Carolina to complete a degree in medicine. Surgical residency took Dr. Muller to Orlando, Florida where he discovered a special interest in the field of colon and rectal surgery and ultimately did a fellowship at the Colon and Rectal Clinic of Orlando.

Dr. Muller previously practiced in Indianapolis and is believed to be the first surgeon in that state to perform transanal endoscopic microsurgery. This technique provides a chance to treat a number of early rectal cancers and precancerous growths without requiring any abdominal incisions and with a much quicker recovery.

Dr. Muller loves spending time with his family. His wife is a pathologist who emigrated to the United States from Poland in 1988. They are expecting their first child very shortly. Dr. Muller’s one brother is a neuroradiologist here in Fairfax and his other brother is in radiology residency at the nearby Georgetown University. It was Dr. Muller’s strong desire to strengthen his family ties to Northern Virginia that has lead him to join the practice at Fairfax Colon & Rectal Surgery.
